Description
Key West has had a long military presence; in the past, the Navy was the Big Brother of the Keys with an amazing amount of personnel in the area. This naval station's strategic location proved vital during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. President John F. Kennedy visited the Naval Station, Key West afterwards to thank service members and their families for their contributions during the crisis. The naval presence in the Keys was reduced during the 1970s with the closure of the naval station and eventual sale of the former base property to local developers. This painting is a nostalgic reminder of the past prior to that closing.
