Description
On our way down from atop Gellert Hill in Budapest Hungary, we came upon several fine overlook points from which to view the Danube River, the Pest side of the city, and the Liberty Bridge. It is mesmerizing to watch from above the complex and constant interweaving of vehicular traffic, trams, and pedestrians that is intermittently interrupted by the squealing of tires and the crashing of metal! In fact, soon after I took this photo, we watched as if in slow motion a rear end car collision. From our viewpoint, we could see the accident coming well before we heard the crunch. We can only wonder why the drivers didn’t! Liberty Bridge was built in the Art Nouveau style for the 1896 Millennium World Exhibition, celebrating Hungary’s 1000 years. The top of the four masts are decorated with large bronze statues of the Turul, a falcon-like bird, prominent in ancient Hungarian mythology. It is the shortest bridge in Budapest at 333.6 m in length. Its 20.1 m width accommodates only one lane of vehicular traffic in each direction and one lane of tram traffic in each direction. The bridge’s original name was the Franz Joseph Bridge named after Emperor Franz Joseph. However, during World War II, on 16 January 1945, this bridge along with every other bridge in Budapest, was blown up by the retreating German forces ahead of the advancing Soviet forces. After the war it was the first bridge to be reconstructed, reopening for traffic on 20 August 1946 and renamed Liberty Bridge. Together with an entire stretch of waterfront, this bridge is part of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage site.
